Tip 1 Newly mulched areas should be covered at a depth of 3 to 4 inches. To apply over existing mulch, add 1 to 2 inches. Lightly rake the surface of existing mulch at mid season to refresh the appearance of your landscape. Tip 2 Color enhanced mulches need several hours of sunshine after being spread to "bake" in the color. So if rainy weather is in the forecast, hold off, or you may have the color leaching out! Tip 3 What about those mulch "volcanoes" you sometimes see around the base of trees? Bad, bad, bad!!! Excessive mulch encourages shallow root growth. The root balls of trees and shrubs should only have a light dusting of mulch. Tip 4 And then there is Mushroom Soil. This compost acts as a perfect sponge to retain moisture in sandy soil and it also creates air spaces in compacted clay soil. Spread 3 to 4 inches over your soil and rake or till in. Do not use around trees and shrubs. Return to Top |
